the Book of the Dead. Discussion Egyptian religion was polytheistic, meaning that the Egyptians had many gods; their religion "guided every aspect of ... life" (The Egyptian Book of the
Dead). They worshipped perhaps as many as 2000 deities, each of which represented both the "characteristics of a specific earthly force," which was "combined with a heavenly power" (The Egyptian
Book of the Dead). This dual nature can be seen in the fact that many gods and goddesses "were represented as part human and part animal (The Egyptian Book of
the Dead). The Book of the Dead is not a single volume, but is instead the name a group of Egyptologists have given to a "group of mortuary spells written
on sheets of papyrus" (Parsons, 1996). The papyrus is covered with "magical texts" and features illustrations that accompany the texts, which are called "vignettes" (Parsons, 1996). The scrolls were placed
in the tombs with the dead as a sort of guidebooks or instruction manual to help them "pass through the dangers of the underworld and attain an afterlife of bliss
in the Field of Reeds" (Parsons, 1996). Some of the texts are written on vellum or linen instead of papyrus, and some of them can be found on the coffins
of the dead and the walls of the tombs (Parsons, 1996). The Book is lengthy, since the texts are "divided into individual spells or chapters" and there are almost 200
of them in total (Parsons, 1996). However, there is no one papyrus that contains all the texts (Parsons, 1996). Parsons writes, "If the prospective owner of a Book was wealthy
