other justifications for war such as the ones that support the present war in the gulf. However, the effects are nothing less than horrible. The old war is hell comparison
comes to mind. It seems that anecdotal evidence supports the thesis that war is horrible. However, different cultures have different views of war and it is important to explore as
many cultures as possible to understand war better and to perhaps also have a greater understanding of the effects of war. Further, in exploring various religious groups, and looking at
their past histories, one can perhaps glena understanding into why war continues. Benjamin Tudela for example writes on The Jewish Community of Twelfth Century Baghdad. The rabbi traveled throughout the
Mediterranean in order to uncover information about the Jewish communities in the region, and it was found that during the time period which was around 1159, the Jews had largely
given up military power. This is an important point and goes to the idea of peace and how some people live. There are people today who chant slogans related to
peace and give up notions of war, inclusive of defense. This is of course something largely associated with Christian ideals. However, this book points to an older, Jewish Community where
in fact ideals are for peace as well. Also, Jews today are stereotyped as being opposed to war on one hand as characterized by how they were easily annihilated during
the Holocaust to the stereotype of the revolutionary Israeli. The dichotomy is perhaps resolved to some extent by this work that delves into Jewish history of long ago. The Middle
