no tolerance policies and calls home at a greater rate than ever before. Years ago, ditching school for fun was not out of the ordinary but it did not necessarily lead to extensive mischief. It also did not lead to a life of crime or create significant legal implications. Things are different today. Alcohol laws are much more stringent and there is a tough stance on illegal drugs as well. Although juvenile programs, and drug court programs, have to some extent open the gates for a new attitude on crime, they have not been extremely lenient. In fact, while these programs provide second chances, they are no panacea. The police departments of America mean business. Today, truancy is not a small crime. It is a social problem that is taken quite seriously. It is because there are more social problems directly related to teens that truancy has become a point of interest. Many police departments around the country initiate truancy patrols. Some believe that these patrols will not only keep children in school longer, but also that they will reduce crime. A student writing on this subject notes that it is thought that truancy patrol efforts reduces property crimes, as well as gang activity. It is also noted that in particular graffiti and burglaries may subside as a result of targeting truancy. One may take that a step further to note that tackling truancy will also reduce teen pregnancy and curb other problems that are aligned with going against the grain. Cutting school is a serious problem today in many cities and creates greater amounts of unsupervised time for vulnerable children and teenagers.
