Though not typical, the trends that have come from electronic media do include things like music videos, television programming and advertisements that seem to make pornography okay. Even on a Friends episode, there had been a situation where free porn was pumped into the guys apartment and everyone was afraid to shut it off as to lose the privilege. This suggests a tolerance for pornography. Another trend is gaming. Video games have been given much attention. Games have existed historically, and board games are in fact encouraged, but it seems that there is now something called video game addiction. Along with ordinary video games, and its excessive use, is the gambling trend. The Internet has encouraged various forms of gaming, and gambling is simply one type. Of course, video games and gambling can be good pastimes but they have gotten bad press. Sternheimer (1999) for example claims that gaming can be used to enhance skills. This is something that has been shown to be accurate. Gaming enhances eye-hand coordination for example. Obviously, there are detriments such as addiction and loss of money due to gambling. A significant trend that teens have been aligned with, as a result of electronic media, is text-messaging. This trend has altered the way that people communicate in society. It is a trend that had begun with the Internet and soon, email became pass?. It was the text message that could be created in real time and was almost like speaking to another individual.
