be called the "idiot box" because there are so many choices today. Adults are also guilty of indulging in television for many hours per week. Some think it is not
really harmful and it is after all a babysitter of sorts. Many women do not see any other option for getting their work done. With toddlers running amuck and much
to do, there are many young children plopped in front of the television screen. And while this seems to be a habit, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more
than one or two hours of television per day ("Television and the family," 2005). While the number of hours spent watching television is obviously hours that could be spent
doing something productive, that is not the only reason for the negative attitude towards television. One reason that experts warn against the hazards of television is that it prompts violence.
One study demonstrates that there are about 25 violent acts per hour shown on childrens television (Browne & Hamilton-Giachritsis, 2005). In fact, many people are surprised when they watch cartoons
as adults. As children, the cartoons were very funny, but when an adult witnesses the cartoons they realize that the behavior demonstrated by the characters is the same behavior that
children are reprimanded for. The study noted suggests that a high amount of exposure to television will could lead to violence (2005). A high association had been reported between
the number of hours watched during the teen years or early adulthood and the likelihood of antisocial behavior like the threats aggression, or assault or even robbery (2005).
