An 8 page discussion of the impact stress can have on police officers. The causes of stress are noted and a detailed discussion of their physiological and mental impacts is presented. These impacts can include symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Physiological problems are often accompanied by behavioral problems as well. The contention of this paper is that a police officer suffering from the more severe manifestations of stress is incapable in carrying out their job duties. All police offers suffering from stress must seek out the assistance of qualified medical and psychological personnel. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

By most opinions law enforcement can be categorized as one of the most stressful of occupations. Police officers are on the front lines of the continuing battle against
crime. This in itself takes a tremendous toll stress wise. Who could go into a job with the knowledge that they could be shot or otherwise offended at
practically any second? Concern over bodily harm, however, is not the only factor in the police officers job which translates into stress. Bribery, interrogations, conducting searches, evidence seizure
and arrests are only some of the instances where stress raises its ugly head. DeFrank and Ivancevich (1998, PG) define stress as being an:
"adaptive response, moderated by individual differences, that is a consequence of any action, situation, or event, that places
special demands on a person". This definition emphasizes the individual response to stress.
Stress is a reaction, not the event or situation which causes the reaction (DeFrank and Ivancevich, 1998). The outcome of
that stress can be phenomenal in terms of its impact on the officer and on the performance of their job. Those who enforce the laws of our society not
only carry their own morals and ethics in their hands but they are put into the position of judging those of others. Given the tremendous potential of stress to
negatively impact the manner in which a police officer conducts his or her duties, it can be contended that severely stressed police officer or other law enforcement individual is simply
