(2001) puts it this way: " Columbine was not the first mass killing at a school, but it was so ornately gory and so profoundly heartbreaking that it became a
cultural reference point" (p.PG). After the incident, school shootings would deteriorate as attention was paid to the problem. A broad analysis was introduced as millions wondered how such a thing
could happen. While there have been many explanations and plausible reasons, one area of focus became school bullying. It is not only blatant bullying behavior that may lead to tragic
results, but small methods of alienation where students are labeled and viewed as outcasts are significant types of bullying. There have always been "out groups" and "in groups" in
schools and this phenomenon in part may be construed as bullying. Yet, many think of bullying as loud and obnoxious and not a quiet disregard for an individual. Definitions of
bullying do focus on such types of obvious behaviors. According to Weir (2001), bullying occurs when "one or more children repeatedly and intentionally intimidate, harass or physically harm another
child who is perceived to be unable to defend himself or herself" (p.1249). Stan Davis defines it as follows: "Bullying is somebody picking on someone else and hurting them"
("Dealing, 2002, p.6). The harmful effects of bullying are quite obvious and it is hard to argue that it is a normal part of life. While children are told
to ignore the bully, or to just let things pass as a normal part of school life, bullying does have negative consequences. Bullying s negative impact has been noted in
