to steer children away from drugs and helping them cope with personal problems. The idea of peer counseling, or those of a similar age bracket helping each other, is thought
to be innovative. Past models saw strict counseling practices where psychologists and teachers were responsible for modeling behavior and steering children in the right direction. Of course, it did not
take experts to catch on to the notion that peer pressure is very powerful. Indeed, peer pressure is seen as being the culprit in drug addiction and other undesirable behaviors.
In fact, the famous DARE program is based on activities which help to foster a way in which children can resist peer influences. However, peer influences, because they are
so psychologically powerful, have been used to try to shift behavior in a positive way. While some peer counseling programs may enrich students, and may even prevent teens from adopting
other, less desirable influences, there have been criticisms of peer programs. In the academic realm, peers have been used as teachers of sorts. But what effect does peer teaching have
on the grades of those who are purportedly being helped? This look into peer tutoring, and other forms of peer counseling, will attempt to answer those questions in measuring the
success of peer programs pertinent to academic achievement. II. Peer Leadership Peer feedback as well as modeling have been considered to be powerful tools
in helping one to recognize and avoid ineffective problem-solving procedures (Whimbey & Lockhead, 1980 as cited in Peel, 1998). Individuals seem to learn from one another as they explain and
