Mouse Club and ending up in the Tabloids with her panties off. These types of role models and images send negative messages to young girls and also add to the objectification of women. She is just one of many women in media who send these negative messages. Similarly, many hip hop or rap videos send messages of exploitation. Women are scantily dressed in these videos and the lyrics which accompany the pictures are often misogynist in nature. Anderman (1999) writes: "Prominent female rappers like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown do little to improve the image, wielding sex and blatant materialism as their stock in trade" (p. N1). Those two examples-Britney and rap videos-are extreme. There are others. For example, Hudepohl (2007) reports on the trend where girls kiss other girls. Hudepohl (2007) begins an article on the matter with the following observation: "First Madonna kissed Britney. Then Samantha toyed around with a lesbian lover on Sex and the City. Even Mischa Bartons character on The OC got in on the girl-on-girl action, and last January, two girls lusted after each other in the mainstream film Imagine Me & You." The article goes on to ask why this type of "bi-curious" behavior is so popular (Hudepohl, 2007). She goes into some possibilities as to why media is promoting this trend (Hudepohl, 2007). Of course, one might suggest that this trend may have been proliferated by men, and not women. One only has to remember the Howard Stern show and other similar fare that promote lesbians as a bit of a turn on for men.
