shaped my character, as well as my career. Along with skills and the opportunity to excel, the Navy shaped my character, teaching me responsibility and pride in my work. As
a First Class Petty Officer, I received the opportunity to teach other sailors, and received the satisfaction that comes with conveying knowledge to young minds. General George Patton pointed out
that wars are fought with weapons, but they are won by men and it is the "spirit of the men who follow and of the man who leads that gains
the victory" (Sweeney, Rhodes and Boling 35). As this indicates, military leaders are highly aware that the character of its service personnel is intrinsic to producing an effective military organization.
Dedicated military personnel see themselves as committed to a career of service to the country as a whole, and it is this dedication that motivates them to act beyond the
parameters of self-interest and take action that serves the greater good (Sweeney, Rhodes and Boling 38). By adopting the military core values and ethos, my military service shaped my character
and my life making me a better man, a better father and a better citizen. I joined the military roughly twenty years ago in order to escape from life
