is hinged together by a collection of joints. These joints vary significantly, however, in terms of both function and structure. Some are simply connective points between bones while
others are critical components that allow movement. Joints, some more so than others it seems, are susceptible to a variety of injuries and diseases. They are also subject
to deterioration through aging. Interestingly, immobilizing skeletal injuries is one of the more common means of treating these injuries. Immobility, however, also seems to be a contributing factor
in joint problems. This is particularly a concern for joints that typically function in movement. Fortunately, a number of interventions have been proven beneficial in addressing joint problems
arising from disease, injury, and deterioration. An important consideration, however, is that the pursuit of these options is often affected by an individuals belief in their ability to help.
This is particularly true in regard to rehabilitation programs emphasizing movement. The intent of this paper is to emphasize the importance of maintaining joint mobility even in the
face of injury or disease. Injuries such as bone fractures can have a tremendously adverse impact on joint function. Typically, fractures are
pulled back in place and the injury is immobilized using a plaster cast or some other means until the injury can heal. Unfortunately, this means that the joint of
the affected limb is immobilized as well. This can result in serious problems. Joints "freezing up" is a common phenomena and one that is overcome through exercise.
In some treatment regimes such problems are overcome with the use of passive movement devices that help the individual repetitively flex their joints without having to exert the energy and
