commonplace in the business world is a hopefully somewhat unique event for yourself or your employees on a personal level. It is important to remember that this event affects
not only the "downsized," but also those who remain. But why is this so important in todays business world? (Brockner 1998). Downsizing has become for far too many a
common occurrence in todays business world. Because of this, and many other factors affecting job relations and employment, there are many employers and employees who no longer believe in
the concept of lifetime employment. As a result of this we find that employers often underestimate the need to provide support to employees, both those who are "being released
and the survivors" (Brockner, 1998, pp. 413). Many employers feel that the only support they can provide is expensive outplacement services. The decision to downsize is made
for both strategic as well as financial reasons. The expectation of employers is that the expenses saved in this reduction will lead to a positive impact on the bottom
line and will ultimately be reflected in overall improved profitability and productivity for the rest of the staff. However, many organizations neglect to factor in the psychological impact of
downsizing on those employees who still remain. In fact, if downsizing is handled improperly, and many times it is, the problems it was designed to correct may be intensified due
to the impact on the loyalty and attitudes of the survivors (Brockner 1998). LITERATURE REVIEW In an article entitled "Age Discrimination" we find that, mandatory retirement is one of
