importance is to an audience. Discussion Combat stress is "the mental, emotional or physical tension, strain, or distress resulting from exposure to combat and combat-related conditions" (Combat stress, 2000). It
must be controlled because uncontrolled it can lead to mission failure (Combat stress, 2000). Among the symptoms of mild physical stress reactions are trembling, cold sweats, pounding heart, fatigue, nausea
and vomiting; mild emotional stress reactions are crying, anger, irritability and anxiety (Combat stress, 2000). The symptoms of severe physical stress reactions are constant movement, shaking and trembling and the
inability to hear, feel or see; severe emotional reactions include memory loss, severe stuttering or the inability to speak at all, and hallucinations (Combat stress, 2000). These reactions are obviously
crippling to a units effectiveness, and they are not at all unusual. In Okinawa in 1945, "during a peak month of battle, the combat stress casualties among Marine Forces were
reported as high as one for every two wounded in action (WIA)" (Combat stress, 2000). When the fighting is even more intense, say for a period of a few days
or the duration of a firefight, the ratio can rise as high as one to one-that is, for every soldier who is wounded, another is rendered useless by combat stress
(Combat stress, 2000). The topic is significant because it affects everyone in some degree. To those who are in combat, they have to find a way to overcome this and
regain their effectiveness. However, anyone speaking on the topic would likely be addressing a civilian audience, so how does it relate? Its important because as people return from a combat
