in others it has been decidedly negative. However, in most instances the impact of colonization has largely been a mixture of the two - creating some benefits for society
as well as drawbacks in other aspects. In Michael Ondaatjes, Anils Ghost, there is a definitive sense of tragedy that surrounds
colonization. The story takes place in war-torn Sri Lanka in the 1980s and 1990s. What is so striking about this story is the means by which the government
and other groups go about their assaults, amid such denial and such secrecy. This is not a public war, meaning that in an effort to not alienate other governments
the war takes place unofficially and in the shadows of Sri Lanka. In the final analysis, there can be no denying that in this case colonization has wrecked havoc
on the whole of Sri Lanka, and has rendered the past a permanent and poignant stamp on the present. The bodies that Anil and her co-workers unearth remind both
these characters and the reader that this is a war that has been fought for a length of time, not merely a temporary bloody battle.
The evident aftermath of colonization on Sri Lanka has not been beneficial but has torn the country apart - literally. Unable to effectively unite the
disparate groups of the country, Sri Lanka literally killed those who chose to dissent as opposed to integrating them in the new regime. This was a country built upon
a history of rich traditions and culture, but once that very foundation was manipulated it became impossible to stop the inhabitants of Sri Lanka from turning against one another.
