Asia and both are struggling to contain outbreaks of ethnic conflict ("Chinas rebellious west " 33). But that is only the tip of the iceberg when talking about Indonesia. Years
of colonialism has taken a toll on the nation striving to create a democracy. It has endured recent leadership that many say was corrupt and now, for a few years,
it has been provided with hope under a new administration. But the fighting has not stopped and things are not copacetic in this nation that could one day be great.
Its economic growth however rests on what happens politically. In delving into this situation it helps to look at the countrys history. II. History of Rule in Indonesia
Indonesia has had a long and varied history. After many years of colonial rule, social upheaval seemed to lead to political change and nationalist leaders Sukarno and Hatta did declare
Indonesias independence on August 17, 1945; that was after three years of Japanese occupation ("A brief" 9). The nationalists promptly drew up a provisional constitution and created a cabinet,
but the Dutch surrendered its colonial claim after several years of resistance (9). The New Order regime has purportedly transformed Indonesias economy and society during the past several decades
