The behaviors and attitudes of the Samurai would also seep into the general public, something that arguably shaped modern Japan. There is much evidence to support this view, but it
pays to begin with a definition. What is bushido? Bushido is a chivalric code of honor ("Bushido," 2005). It is aligned with the military caste system in Japan and emphasizes
things like self-discipline, simple living and brave acts ("Bushido," 2005). This is of course consistent with any military culture. The story of Bushido is long and by the following
description, one can see why it is so powerful to this day: " The samurai warrior lived by a code called bushido that required unquestioning loyalty and obedience to his
feudal lord, strict self-discipline, and fearlessness in battle. It was dishonorable for a samurai to be taken alive by an enemy, and samurai were expected to commit suicide rather than
surrender. The values and attitudes incorporated in bushido did not die with the formal abolition of the samurai class because the emperors key advisers were samurai themselves" ("AN ATTEMPT TO
EXPLAIN JAPANESE WAR CRIMES," 2007). The history of Bushido is vast. It started during the 1100s and was integral to the wars that would take place there ("Bushido," 2005). It
would be with the ending of the Edo period that loyalty and restraint would emerge as a part of this model ("Bushido," 2005). Interestingly, the meditative aspects of Zen would
play a part in the creation of the ideas aligned with Bushido ("Bushido," 2005). Hence, there is a sense of deliberate creation, self-preservation and a desire to express excellence. After
