even violent. This paper explores the effects alcoholic parents can have on their children, and why this matter is of concern to everyone. Discussion The issue of having alcoholic parents
is important because of the effects it can have on children later in life. In one example, researchers studied how having alcoholic parents and having adverse experiences related to the
risk of developing "alcoholism and depression in adulthood" (Anda et al., 2002, p. 1001). In this study, 9,346 subjects who visited a HMO clinic were asked to fill out a
survey "about 9 adverse childhood experiences: experiencing childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; witnessing domestic violence; parental separation or divorce; and growing up with drug-abusing, mentally ill, suicidal, or criminal
household members" (Anda et al., 2002, p. 1001). Twenty percent of the participants reported that their parents abused alcohol, and that 20% had a "significantly greater" risk of having had
all 9 adverse experiences (Anda et al, 2002). In addition, the prevalence of alcoholism "was higher among Ss who reported parental alcohol abuse, no matter how many adverse experiences they
reported" (Anda et al, 2002, p. 1001). In sum, children of alcoholics have many more adverse experiences in childhood than children of non-alcoholics (Anda et al, 2002). A study done
in Spain finds that children of alcoholics are, as a group, at risk for skipping school days, performing poorly on subjects, and dropping out of school (Casa-Gil and Navarro-Guzman, 2002).
This would indicate that alcoholic parents, no matter what their culture, have a negative impact on their children. Alcoholic parents have another negative effect on their children: they lower their
