there is considerable evidence that suggests that many other health problems can be linked to cigarettes, from heart disease to chronic emphysema. In order to understand the magnitude of
the health issues related to this toxic habit, it is first necessary to understand the process that the body goes through when a person smokes. Over one third
of the American population smokes, and as each of these individuals inhales, they introduce into their body a number of different chemicals. The most familiar chemical is nicotine, which
is often associated with the addictive properties of tobacco. Nicotine is the substance that enters the blood stream through the lungs, and provides an individual with the stimulant effect
of smoking (Johnson, 1986). Individuals claim a number of different sensations from the release of this drug, from elation to a sense of calm, especially if there has been
a significant delay in the use of the drug (Pomerleau, 1994). But nicotine is perhaps the least damaging of the compounds released into a persons body when they smoke.
Tobacco has been described as a nicotine delivery system in recent discourse about cigarettes and the knowledge that cigarette companies have had regarding the addictive qualities of tobacco.
But in recent years, it has also been noted that while nicotine is introduced into the blood stream, other chemicals also bombard the sensitive tissues of the oral cavity, larynx,
pharynx, esophagus and lungs. Over 3000 chemical components, among them benzopyrenes and vinyl chloride, are also delivered directly into the body by the inhalation of cigarette smoke (Johnson ,
