When she got to the checkstand, the cashier poured salt into the already wound of embarrassment by remarking, "Oh, so youre the mother." At this point, the mother began to
wonder about the effect of both parents working on the development of her child. Many psychologists and sociologists have promoted the notion
that it is not the amount of time a parent spends with the child but rather the quality of that time that matters. Is this true? The parents of the
boy running around the grocery store had subscribed to the notion that it wasnt so much how much time a parent spent with their child as it was what they
did with the child when they were together. This lawyer-mother and journalist-father had to admit to themselves that the very carefully planned time of attention they spent with their children
between eating dinner and the childrens bedtime was just not enough. The children were turning into little monsters. This couple was able to make a drastic change in their life
-- they moved to the suburbs and the mother is only going to work part-time while the children are in school. They are lucky because this option is not open
to all parents; many need both salaries to survive and in the case of single parents, there are few acceptable alternatives to working (Shapiro, 1997).
