prison counselors. Discussion The first thing that many corrections people say is that budget cuts are crippling their ability to help inmates. "The system provides some counseling to as many
prisoners as possible, but its a matter of demand outweighing supply"(Younkman, 2003). Its probably not an exaggeration to say that in todays "vigilante" climate in the U.S., people would rather
lock up prisoner and toss away the key than try to help them, so any money needed for things like counseling will be low on a priority list. At
times, counseling is a condition of parole, so inmates are put on waiting lists and their time in prison extended until the counselors can see them (Younkman, 2003). Some prisoners
are skeptical of counseling but others appreciate it, and even want it, but are afraid they will never receive it (Younkman, 2003). There are simply too many prisoners and
not enough counselors to go around; for instance, in Michigan the Department of Corrections employs "about 100 psychologists" to help the nearly "49,500 inmates in the state prison system," not

prison population turnover, each team was seeing "as many as 300 prisoners" (Younkman, 2003). Overall, approximately 6,000 prisoners receive treatment, including group counseling; Levay says that they are getting the
"minimal care that can be done ... The effectiveness (of counseling) is questionable" given those conditions" (Younkman, 2003). The DOC admits that prisoners are often released before they receive the
