relationships and effective communication is essential if a manager is to be successful and effective. As Schwartz and Dropo say, "Successful communication is a complex and difficult process" (n.d.). It is a process that involves getting your message across to the other person(s) in such a way that they understand what you really mean (Schwartz and Dropo, n.d.). In the work setting, this will lead to getting things done smoothly (Schwartz and Dropo, n.d.). If a managers instruction is unclear, the employee will not know what is expected and will often fail to meet expectations (Schwartz and Dropo, n.d.). Schwartz and Dropo comment that a good communicator: "uses appropriate language, tone, pitch and volume. . . . Uses non-verbal signals to emphasize and support messages . . . . Solicits feedback. . . . Conveys understanding" (n.d.). A good communicator also listens effectively. This means the person may need to ask the speaker to clarify what he means. The listener needs to respond in a way that demonstrate what they think the speaker means. Effective communication involves both speaking and listening and of the two, listening is the most important. Too often, people make assumptions about what the message means. This can easily lead to misunderstandings and even conflict. Delegation is a skill many new managers lack. There are many reasons managers do not delegate, the most common is a fear the task will not be completed correctly, i.e., the way the manager would do it. However, failing to delegate, the manager becomes overburdened and overstressed. Schwartz and Dropo comment, "Delegation is a challenging skill for all managers to master because it involves effective communication, motivation, goal setting and leadership" (n.d.).
