while it is something that many believe should be used rarely, having the option is something that provides comfort for many women. After all, having a baby will change anyones
life and in the case of rape or incest--or even in the case of a mistake in judgment--having abortion as an alternative is desirable. At the same time, there is
the other side of the coin. There are many people who believe that abortion is murder. They vehemently oppose abortion and have even bombed abortion clinics, and killed doctors who
perform abortions. Now, a new law could threaten the legality of the medical procedure. In 2004, a law was passed, purportedly to provide retribution for fetuses killed when its
mother was murdered, but in effect, it may have a life of its own. In other words, while the act mandates that the fetus be considered a separate human being,
it does not make abortion illegal. However, the implications are that down the road, it might. In fact, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act provides for additional penalties if
in fact anyone is convicted of harming a fetus during the commission of certain crimes (Kissling, 2005). In essence, it provides individual legal status to the embryo, fetus or fertilized
egg, and it may be enforced even in the case when the woman did not know of the pregnancy (2005). This means that anyone who murders a woman who happens
to be pregnant will be charged with a double murder. This law sprung from the Laci Peterson case (2005). In fact, it is sometimes called Laci and Conners
law (Michelman, 2003). It is a law endorse by the Bush administration (Chavkin, 2001). The bill, which was alive as early as 1999 was something that reproductive rights
