that are used change and develop. The development of mega-ships may be seen as creating an environment where there will be a clear delineation between the TEU larger mega-ships and
the older smaller ships. Mega ships may be defined as ships carrying more than 12,000 TEUs, making them the giants of the sea, and with the real limits on
size not yet fully explored. It is expected that the ports will continue to be an important source of economic activity and support the international trade and the economies of
many countries. However with the emergence of the mega ships the way this takes place will not be the same. Today there are ships able to carry 4,500 20 foot
long containers, and with more than 4,500 containers on board the ships can be more than 1,100 feet long this shops, which can gain massive economies of scale, are likely
to gain a high level of the worlds cargo markets. It is expected that by the year 2010 40% of the cargo carried by ships will be carried by mega-ships
(SLC, 1999). The ships need large and deep cargo ports, the faculties to cope wit the volume of the containers, however the need to change and adapt to changing
ship sizes is not unique to this time. There has been change in the shipping industry for many years; the development of container shipping may be divided into two phases
the first phase lasts to the made 1980s and here there are four different ship sizes which were the only choices until the Panamax was developed, which was seen
as a revolution in shipping mush the way the mega-ship is seen today (Cullinane, 1999). The Panamax also provided ports with challenges, this ship was able to hold 13
