of the principal ways in which the effects of war can negatively affect the nations involved are loss of life, economic consequences, and the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder ruining
still more lives. One of the greatest tragedies of war is the loss of life. During previous eras, war was confined to battlefields and civilian casualties were few, but
modern warfare necessarily involves innocent civilian deaths. While military leaders try to avoid killing innocent civilians, the nature of modern weaponry makes this an extremely difficult feat to accomplish. For
example, when nuclear bombs were dropped on two cities in Japan, bringing about an end to World War II, thousands of innocent people were instantly vaporized and those who were
not immediately killed suffered slow, extremely painful deaths. Also during World War II, the U.S. conducted repeatedly bombing raids on Germany that turned its cities into rubble and took thousands
of lives. Similarly, and also during World War II, the Germans repeatedly bombed London, which is a campaign known as the Blitz. This military action killed thousands of innocent civilians.
Another loss of life associated with war is the loss of wildlife and the destruction of nature. War creates battlefields that resemble crater-pocketed lunar landscapes where once a green and
living forest stood. Also, war takes the lives of countless soldiers. World Wars I and II robbed Europe of its best and brightest young men, which is a loss that
undoubtedly contributed to the dimensioned importance of European countries in the post-World War II era. A contributing factor to Europes decline during this era was the effect of war on
