is not stellar. While things had been going down hill since 2000, things were made worse by the recent war. The present economy is in turmoil because the future is
uncertain. Consumer confidence is down and unemployment is up. Yet, it is important to remember that the downturn did not start yesterday and the booming 1990s did experience some
difficulty. During the 1990s things were not so good for Asia as the continent endured a monetary crisis. Also, in the very early nineties, the globe-including America-- went through a
mini-recession. Despite a few setbacks, the economy of the 1990s was largely driven by technology and semi-conductors were a large part of that paradigm.
Semi -conductors are materials which have electrical conductivity and increases along with increasing temperature ("Department," 1997). It is a trend that is opposite to metals as semi-conductors generally have
a band gap between the valence and conduction bands; this is smaller than what is found in insulators (1997). The reason that the conductivity increases is due to the temperature
increases as more electrons become thermally excited (1997). This makes them able to jump the band gap that exists in between the conduction band and the valence (1997).
Semiconductors have become important largely due to the advent of the computer. One can see its practical significant as it can conduct electricity
without having the detriments or limitations of metals. It is a product that has helped the U.S. economy but has global implications. The market has interestingly created new opportunities for
third world nations. For example, a swamp in Borneo is one location of semiconductor manufacturing ("The Great," 2001). Sarawak has done well with a variety of natural resources
