swift. Usually, there are many appeals-at least in the United States-before the death penalty is implemented. Further, the use of the death penalty in the world is rather controversial and
the U.S. is only amongst a small number of countries that still use it. That said, many people applauded the doing away with the tyrant. The deed did occur at
an interesting time. It was done shortly before New Years Eve. In general, the talk at the water cooler and on the conservative talk shows is that Saddam got what
he deserved. In fact, many people do believe that. George Bush thought it was an important incident in Iraqs quest for democracy (Todd, 2007). Of course, that is a bit
of an odd statement as in this day and age it seems to be equivalent to applauding the beheading of Marie Antoinette and her husband. Clearly, the timing and method
of execution could not have been less democratic. And while many people did agree that if the ultimate punishment were to be used Saddam Hussein surely deserved it, there has
been a great deal of criticism in respect to the way in which the act was carried out. An opinion in the Northern Echo is relayed as followed: "The danger
now is that his final moments will be remembered for his undoubted dignity in the face of death, and the barbarism of those who carried out his execution. That in
itself is a huge mistake and a gross injustice" (p.10). That is a good point. Although Saddam Hussein was agreeably a "bad man" it is hard not to have any
sympathy for a brave man who does not waver until the bitter end. A significant problem is that the act was done rather quickly. Again, in general, when the death
