Breast cancer makes up more than 25% of all new cases of cancer in women, and of the approximately 175,000 women who developed breast cancer in 1993, 40,000 died
of the disease (Phillips and Lodovico, 1996). The increasing number of women diagnosed with this disease has resulted in a number of studies of the most effective treatment plans
as well as possible presentation treatments that can reduce the chances of the onset of cancer in high risk groups. Research Problem Over the course of the last
decade, an increased focus on breast cancer treatments and the viability of alternative treatment strategies have led to a number of studies. The current literature reflects both the problematic
nature of breast cancer and the increasing focus on the problem of treatment for postmenopausal women. Because Raloxifene hydrochloride has an antiestrogenic effect on breast tissue, the researchers suggest
that it may be beneficial in reducing the chances of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine whether women taking raloxifene
hydrochloride have a lower incidence of breast cancer than women who do not. This purpose is based on the assertion that estrogen plays a significant part in the development
of cancer and that women with high concentrations of estradiol in their blood stream are at the greatest risk of developing breast cancer. This study, then, is designed to
consider the impacts of the use of estrogen receptor modulators, like raloxifene, in maintaining disease-free status in postmenopausal women over a three year period. Theoretical Framework The theoretical
