are difficult times in a persons life; dealing with a chronic illness such as diabetes simply makes an already complicated process more complex (Children and diabetes). Approximately 127,000 children under
19 have diabetes, making it a serious public health issue (Children and diabetes). Having a chronic illness means there will be good days and bad days; there will be numerous
doctors appointments as well as medical emergencies; and the child will need emotional support to cope with the illness (Children and diabetes). In addition, having diabetes "will affect the ways
a child performs at school, socializes with friends and interacts in the family" (Children and diabetes). Caring for a diabetic child will also put a severe emotional drain on the
family, as well as a financial one (Children and diabetes). Most children with diabetes have type 1, which means they require "daily insulin injections and regular monitoring of blood sugar
levels" (Children and diabetes). This means that the child, or a responsible person, will have to see that they get insulin if they need it, and monitor their blood; both
of these could interfere with daily routine and make the child feel hes being singled out (Children and diabetes). Children with type 1 diabetes must have the condition controlled or
