South Korea to finally come into full bloom, and recent elections which prompted new leadership has proven that democracy can win out in the long run. While that seems to
be an idyllic situation, Korea does have people with different democratic ideals. In order to understand the differences, it is important to understand the government it contains. First, what is
democracy? It seems as if that is a rather simple question, but while many people believe that they understand the hallmarks of democracy, many mistakenly use and embrace concepts of
democracy that are largely myth. Most definitions of democracy today include the simplistic notion that a nation is ruled by its people. In ancient Athens, it meant rule by
the demos, or citizens (McLeish, 1993). While the definitions essentially mean the same thing, there are differences of opinion in terms of the fundamentals of democracy. In ancient Greece, the
concept was taken literally (1993). In other words, the people literally ruled. Citizens, who were male and over the age of thirty, which was equivalent to about a quarter of
the residents in fifth century Athens, actually rule directly (1993). They were appointed to public offices (1993). Like politics in general, the form did not escape criticism. Socrates, Plato and
Aristotle each condemned the form of democracy used and suggested that it was dangerous (1993). Instead, they recommended that what should happen is to implement as system of government to
incorporate aristocracy, monarchy and democracy (1993). Today, the population is such that a direct democracy would be impossible. In the United States, an indirect or representative, democracy exists. That is,
