many different reasons. There is a lack of understanding, at times, in regards to what people are capable of learning, what knowledge they already possess, and what type of education
is necessary, to name but a few of the misunderstandings in education. K.P. Mohanan, in the essay "Who is an Educated Person: Ingredients of Educatedness," attempts to focus on some
of these elements of the institution of education, defining what makes an educated person in an attempt to better address the needs and possibilities inherently possessed in educating. In the
following paper we first discuss what the author is saying and then analyze the validity of his claims. The Educated Person Mohanan, at the very beginning of the
essay, states the reasoning behind his investigation by saying "Discussions and debates on teaching and learning in educational institutions presuppose prior conceptions of education and educated person that are often
taken for granted but generally not spelt out explicitly. What follows is an attempt to sketch the profile of an educated person in such a way that if we agree
on the profile, we can ask how to optimize teaching and learning from this perspective" (1). From this point Mohanan discusses the generalized aspect of education, those aspects of
knowledge that will make a person educated or not. For example, Mohanan illustrates that some specialized knowledge, such as knowledge of the quark theory, is necessary for specialized people, but
not for people who are involved in fields not related, or for individuals who possess a generalized knowledge. For the educated person we can assume, through Mohanans words, that people
should possess the knowledge "that the square root of four is two, and that the earth spins on its axis and goes round the sun, that the pumping of the
