of industry during and after the industrial revolution, which explains why much of the development took placer along the banks canal network within the city due to the links it
created. The area which benefited from its strategic central locations attracted many entrepreneurs setting up business, including Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch pioneers of the steam engine and
gas lighting. Therefore Birmingham has a history of engineering as well as manufacturing, which is still seen within the present day economy. Today the Birmingham and the West
Midland is an important part of the UK economy, the West Midlands as a whole accounted for ?15.2 billion worth of exports in 2005 and around about 7.1% of the
total UK GDP (Birmingham Economy, 2009). The economic base within the city has reflected both local and national changes. For many years Birmingham had been an economy based on manufacturing,
with a cluster of automotive manufacturers and many suppliers in the area as well as other heavy and light industry. However, this has changed; the general movement in many
manufacturing industries has been to shift production to lower coat areas, usually off shore and often combined with outsourcing agreements. This has resulted in a significant change in the Birmingham
economy and economic infrastructure. Over the last 20 years there has been a significant shift in the economy, moving away from the
manufacturing elements of economic development with an increasing amount of services activity taking place. Overall, as the last 20 years the leaven of employment in Birmingham has increased, but this
