"Mississippis economy is dead last in the nation" (p.4A). That sounds very negative. But it is important to remember that this is a great nation so being last is not
terrible. Also, in the United States, some state has to be last. Of course, Mississippi may not have the best economy in the Untied States-as it does have the worst-but
that is perhaps a misleading remark. The rural areas are not doing well. That is not argued. However, there is great potential and movement in income in Mississippi. The unemployment
rate is slightly higher than average, but income brackets are not too bad. Mississippi is struggling a bit, but projections are rosy. Mississippi could fare well in the next decade.
First, a look at Mississippis economic history is relevant. II. A History of the Mississippi Economy Mississippis economy
had been dismal between the mid 1800s and the mid 1900s ("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). The state, until at least the Second World War, was dependent on the cotton market for sustenance
("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). Exports for this state are in the area of raw materials and it imports manufactured goods ("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). People realized that diversification would be necessary to improve the
states economy and soon, there would be some industrial growth in the region ("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). At the start of the twentieth century, most jobs were in the agricultural sector, but
by the time that the 1960s rolled around, there would be a lot of jobs in manufacturing ("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). Industrial growth however would change during the 1970s where the low
paying industries like textile and wood would veer off course and dissipate ("Mississippi-Economy," 2007). In 1992 however, casino gambling would be introduced and this to some extent stimulated this slow
