have suggested that this is a misnomer. That is, the economy is not as bad as it appears. Certainly, one can say that the stock market breaking records is indicative of uncertainty. Yet, it is difficult to tell what the truth is because it is a presidential election year. This means that each side will "spin" the news the way that is good for that sides campaign. Of course, it is difficult to "spin" the news when real companies are failing. Such events make news and it is a difficult thing to hide. At one point early on, John McCain claimed that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. Is this the case? Is the media blowing things out of proportion? A look at the economy is certainly relevant in the scheme of things. To comprehend the economy, it is important to look at economic indicators. These are the numbers that signify whether or not the economy is healthy. Some key indicators include new unemployment claims, consumer confidence surveys, retail sales, housing starts and auto sales (Baumohl, 2007). Before going on to explore some of these indicators used by economists, there are other ways to tell whether or not the economy is strong. One way is to look around and see how friends and family are doing, what is reported on the news, and even what comes in the mail. An NPR news broadcast included an interview with a mail delivery person Andrea Demenovski where she explains that she can tell how the economy is doing by the mail she delivers ("Using Mail As An Economic Indicator," 2008).
