to wonder whether or not the war is expensive. It is. It costs money to try to deter drug use and does nothing to clean up the crime that is
associated with the drug trade. Libertarians suggest that legalizing drugs would create revenue for the state and actually create a favorable economic climate. Today, drugs are sold on the
black market, something that pads the pockets of crime bosses but does nothing for the rest of society. Also, due to the fact that the black market is involved, criminal
activity flourishes. Addicts steal and sometimes kill. The people involved in drug transactions also carry firearms and use them. An added social cost of the illegal drug trade is the
fact that crime is increased. Indeed, legalization would likely have a positive economic effect as it would have the effect of reducing crime. When contemplating this issue as a whole,
or the economics of legalization of drugs, it pays to look at a hypothetical case study along with economic theories. II. Case Study A case study submitted by
a student suggests that the government is concerned about the increasing incidence of armed hold-ups, house-break ins and petty theft attributable to the high price of illegal drugs. This
is a problem that has been around for some time. It is thought that the legalization of substances would help society at large economically and avert crime by providing a
