who lack economic autonomy are likely to be socially unequal. Both theorists make arguments to to the same ends, which is that women must earn enough pay to be
fully functional in society. In evaluating the argument, several things need to be considered. At first glance, the supposition appears valid. After all, how can a woman be considered equal
or fully functional in society if she does not earn enough pay? It does make sense, but there are counter-arguments to that, such as the fact that wealthy women never
have to work, and the fact that they earn no money, has no affect on their equality in society. Some men and women just live off the interest of their
fortunes for example. Thus, the arguments made by the theorists are not always applicable, particularly in todays world where there is gender equality anyway. At the same time, Engels
was likely talking about the underclass and wrote at a time when women were not equal. Hartmann utilized Marxism in her suppositions as well. In order to evaluate their
carefully crafted arguments, it pays to look at the specific pieces of literature. Yet, it should be stressed that despite the fact that women are now equal, and have the
same opportunities as do men, the idea that this is what makes women equal is a misnomer. Despite the fact that there is equality in the boardroom, women still go
home and make the beds and do the dishes and cart the kids around. In other words, money has little to do with gender stratification. Engels looked at society in
an unusual way and of course, when he wrote "The Origin of Family, Private Property and the State," he did so with economic variables in mind. Engels (1978) explains
