are related to the argument that legalization will not only reduce crime, but will provide a new substance to tax. Indeed, the government will get rich off of taxing heroin
and cocaine, and there will be fewer addicts because of it. Legalization is therefore a win-win proposition. Of course, there is the other side of the story. Few believe that
fairytale. Drugs are physically and psychologically addictive and few addicts will simply stop using due to the fact that the substance is made legal. It is true that some addicts
will be more inclined to get help if they will not face drug charges. However, most heavy drug users are in the legal system anyway. It is difficult to escape
that as one small drug bust can land someone in prison. In fact, the state makes a great deal of revenue off of the illicit drug trade already. Townships make
arrests for marijuana, underage alcohol use and so forth and collect a lot of fines. These are small violations of the law, but they nevertheless play into the collection of
a massive amount of money for the government. Because the fines are small, many people simply pay them because it is too expensive to hire a lawyer. This is true
even when police use illegal tactics to secure an arrest. Certainly, there are tax implications and the public sector benefits in many ways from both legal and illegal drug activity.
At the same time, the war on drugs does come with a price tag as well. The extra police patrols and DEA does not come free. Either way, even if
the government component were neutral, drug abuse does have attached to it an economic cost in a larger sense. There are other implications of drug abuse on the economy.
