Introduction While the question in our mind may exist, does the market for second-hand goods play a role in keeping crime figures high? Research has
not determined absolutely that the availability of second-hand markets for stolen goods actually increases theft rates, but does show theft is dependent on having a market (Sutton 401). "Demand for
Crime" The phrase "demand for crime" often applies to those "high ticket" items which a buyer will indicate they will purchase as soon as they are stolen. These
"ticket" items may include automobiles, fine art, jewelry and collections racketeering. Naturally the argument can be made that if this items were not "requested, "they would not be taken,
however the nature of the human animal being what it is, variables, greed and all. Such "wishful thinking" borders somewhere near the edge of the iceberg in the fires
of hell. Yet, interestingly a large portion of the decline in burglaries over the past 20 years can be credited to the parallel decline of "fences" where stolen property
is sold. The organized fencing operation-in which many criminals cart truckloads of stolen goods to a single operation, which then resells them-is either extinct or very nearly so.
