Health care in Canada is being challenge from a number of political, economic, and societal perspectives. Although the Canadian health care system is
viewed by many in the world as exemplary of excellence in both expertise and compassion, in reality the Canadian health care system is facing many challenges which are translating into
a deleterious impact to patient welfare. It can be contended, in fact, that the present climate of fiscal restraint and control at the hands of drug companies has resulted
in a system which discourages preventative approaches to health care. Instead of encouraging preventative methodologies such as attention to proper nutrition, the use of vitamins, and the utilization of
alternative approaches such as massage and acupuncture, Canadian medicine relies almost entirely on pharmacological approaches. Not only does this result in a lowered quality of health, it results in
a significant economic drain on Canadian resources. A particularly often overlooked approach to health care in Canada is the holistic approach. This
is true in spite of the fact that the concept of holism is integrally linked with the goals and objectives of medicine. Holism, after all, embodies the concept of
healing. Holism embodies another concept as well, however, that is the concept of caring. It is a concept which is intimately entwined with energy flows, touch, and complimentary
or alternative therapies (Chang, 2001). Canadian medicine is most often viewed as an empirical discipline, one which concentrates more on scientific
