life one must understand her formidable years. The following paper examines her early years, her years up until her 21st year, illustrating how her family, her mother and father and
step-mother, had a very powerful influence on her development. The Early Years of Jane Addams "On September 6, 1860 Laura Jane
Addams was born to Sarah Weber Addams and John Addams, the same year in which Abraham Lincoln ran for president" (Bettis, 2006). Her father directed a bank and a railroad
and was involved in the State Legilature for a total of 16 years (Bettis, 2006). Her mother was a very strict woman is seems, as well as a very strong
woman (Bettis, 2006). She had eight children and "ran the domestic factor with the help of a hired hand, which enabled her to prepare meals for flour, saw mill and
field workers" (Bettis, 2006). When her husband was away she took control of the mills and assisted the neighbors, perhaps laying some subtle foundation for influencing Janes future as one
who assisted others (Bettis, 2006). Both parents were apparently very strong and disciplined, but lacked much appreciation for things such as the arts (Bettis, 2006).
When Jane was a baby they called her Jenny and when Jenny was only 3 her mother died (Bettis, 2006). At this point her sister, Martha, who
