Charles Eames created the house to showcase what can be done with standardized materials, and toward this end accomplished his goal brilliantly (Matthews, 2004). The materials, as common as they are, are composed in such a way that the finished product of the Eames house remains a benchmark for good design (Matthews, 2004). The house is two-stories that is divided into two parts: one for the residence and one for a studio (Matthews, 2004). These separate divisions are linked together by a common courtyard (Matthews, 2004). At the south end of the home, there is a full-height living room (Matthews, 2004). Both house and studio were built against a huge concrete wall, which was constructed as steel skeletons and was designed to "receive standard industrial sashes and panels" (Matthews, 2004). Therefore, the end result is that the Eames house is a study in simple modernity (Matthews, 2004). This house is "straightforward and workmanlike" based upon its simple design and common materials (Matthews, 2004). And yet, there is a definite uniqueness to the design as well, integrating fresh and unusual elements among the most ordinary of materials and construction (Matthews, 2004). For instance, the paneling that lines the industrial grid is indeed evidence of invention (Matthews, 2004).
