to integrate the different departments of any organisation and all the functions that the company carries out in a single system. Traditionally each of these departments would have a computer
system that was specifically designed and programmed for the individual departmental needs (Anderegg, 2000). They may be within a network, but not using the same systems. ERP tries to combine
all of these different programmes together in a single software programme that will run form only one database. The idea is that this will create an environment where the sharing
of information between departments and communication will be optimised (Anderegg, 2000). If we look at Herseys and the way the supply chain operated,
with the selling of a high level of small goods to a very large number of retailers or wholesalers which a turnaround time of 6 days and the need to
increase profits it may be argued that a system such as ERP would hold many advantages. The supply chain is complex and fast moving, paperwork in a chain such as
this the ability to tie in all the different elements and the desire to make more of the data is seen as a key to increase the profit margins with
greater efficiencies. If we look at the need for an ERP system in terms of competitive forces then tools which are going to
help the company develop a faster and responsive delivery system, that will help the company gain more shelf space. The confectionary industry is very competitive, and shelf space is
