Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 19 page paper discussing small- and medium-sized enterprises' ability to realize the benefits of supply chain management in the electronic environment. Intuitively, it appears that SMEs likely have greater difficulty in moving to the e-business supply chain model than do their larger counterparts. The purpose here is to assess the statement, "full migration to the e-supply chain platform might not be feasible due to resource constraints and other considerations." The paper concludes that SMEs formerly were at great disadvantage when greater divides between information capabilities existed. As organizations of all sizes migrate toward the same kinds of hardware systems that differ mostly in size rather than ability, SMEs' ability to use and profit from streamlined supply chain management in the electronic environment has increased dramatically. Bibliography lists 25 sources. Includes an abstract.

Intuitively, it appears that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) likely have greater difficulty in moving to the e-business supply chain model than do their larger counterparts. This is reasonable
given the investment in hardware and software that e-supply chain activity requires, and it is reasonable given that SMEs are likely not to have access to as many international companies
as do their larger counterparts. But are SMEs at any real disadvantage? The purpose here is to assess this question, from the perspective that for SMEs, "full migration
to the e-supply chain platform might not be feasible due to resource constraints and other considerations." The paper concludes that SMEs formerly were at great disadvantage when greater divides
between information capabilities existed. As organizations of all sizes migrate toward the same kinds of hardware systems that differ mostly in size rather than ability, SMEs ability to use
and profit from streamlined supply chain management in the electronic environment has increased dramatically. Introduction and Background It has been said of the
supply chain that it is "a series of linked suppliers and customers; every customer is in turn a supplier to the next downstream organization," until goods in their final form
reach the ultimate end user. "Logistics" formerly was that area of the organization to which underperforming individuals were sent rather than being terminated. They arranged through excruciatingly slow
methods the transport and receipt of the organizations goods at various stages of the supply chain. Goods physically moved in much the same ways they do today, but the
methods of arranging that movement have changed dramatically in the early years of the new century. As will be seen, supply chain applications in e-business certainly were not unknown
