beings must deal with. For centuries, people have made the conscious decision to alter their minds, but it seems that in recent decades, long after the cocaine was taken out
of Coca-Cola, the government has become very tough on drug related crimes. They have done this to such an extent that peoples property are at risk. Their livelihoods are at
stake as drug testing on the job is a part of the accepted reality. The drug war has social costs as well and much lip service is given to the
notion that drugs are a serious problem. Is this the case? While physical addiction is sometimes a consequence of recreational drug use, one should look at the reality of
drugs in society as compared with the way in which the "problem" is portrayed by media. Not unlike the propaganda perpetuated by the now cult film Reefer Madness, popular
media seems to praise the concept of "rehabilitation" and concur with government in that substance abuse is a serious problem. A journal devoted to counseling begins with the following sentence:
"The consequences of addiction-to alcohol, nicotine, other drugs, overeating, gambling, internet, sex, spending, and work, among others-range from being mildly problematic to life-threatening..." (Merta, 2001, p.1). In Time magazine, Lopez
(1999) reports on one police officers journey through the drug crazed streets and explains the daily grind as including "locking up gangsters and shutting down drug dens" (p.56). Some
drug problems play out in the Tabloids or the news or entertainment stations. There is even a show called Celebrity Justice that outlines the legal entanglements that celebrities find themselves
in. Many of these involve drugs. In fact, not too long ago people watched Robert Downey, Jr.s career go downhill after it was discovered that he had a cocaine addiction
