in Jesus, and a poem that offers many images of suffering, faith, dreams, holy pursuit, and gender. The following paper examines the themes of grief, holy dreaming, and gender as
they relate to a yearning for clarity. The Dream of the Rood In the world of Christianity there has long been the notion that the faithful seek a
sense of clarity in relationship to religion and life and many elements of existence, spiritually and otherwise. Through experiencing grief and suffering, through dreaming and seeking holy dreams, and through
the position of gender, as it relates to being a man, an individual could perhaps find this clarity in the notions presented in this particular poem. In the realm
of grief, and suffering, one author notes how the "central narrator...reflects on his grief, and the theme of eternal reconciliation with Jesus after ones death" (Cannon). This is clearly an
aspect of clarity for the narrator, and clearly presents the need for a sense of clarity, involving a relationship with Jesus, through suffering and grief. This is also clearly seen
in the following excerpt from the poem wherein Jesus is talking about his own grief and life: "On me the Son of God/ did suffer; for that I gloriously now/
tower under heaven, that I might heal/ each and everyone that shows awe of me./ Of old I was once the most bitter of tortures,/ hated by people, until I
showed him lifes path/ properly opened, before mortal man" (The Dream of the Rood 83-89). In this excerpt one sees the vision
of the holy dreamer, the existence of grief and suffering, and the sense that reconciliation, clarity, can be achieved in understanding Jesus and his grief and suffering on the cross.
