Reviewing the contentions made by author Hans Halberstadt in the article “Forget the draft; today’s Army doesn’t want and doesn’t need slackers”, this paper contends that while the draft can be ethically inappropriate in certain situations, in others it can be ethically justified. Utilizes Platonic model from Plato's Republic, John Stewart Mill's theory of utilitarianism, and Immanuel Kant's categorical imperative of reason to support this contention. In "Forget the draft; todays Army doesnt want and doesnt need slackers" author Hans Halberstadt deflates the growing concern amongst the American public that the military draft will be reinstated
as a means of fattening the military ranks in this impending time of crisis. Halberstadt insists that this simply will not be the case. He points out that
those in the know, those who have kept abreast of military issues and ideologies, realize that the military simply doesnt want or need to rely on the draft in that
such a reliance would be sure to contaminate the ranks with those that Halberstadt describes as "Americas slackers, losers, and the uneducated underclass". Halberstadts argument is indeed valid.
Perhaps even more importantly among the issues he brings to task, however, is the ethical issues which the question of the draft calls to mind.
Many would deride Halberstadts opinions as the rantings of an idealist. In reality, however, he is completely intune with the mindset of the military.
Having spent a tour in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner, Halberstadts initiation into the military came some forty years ago. Halberstadts involvement with the military didnt end
after Vietnam. Indeed, he has moved in and out of the military circle for decades, writing extensively about the military community. Halberstadt has to his credit, in fact,
over fifty books on modern military specialties. Halberstadt describes the military, the Army in particular, as an institution which has changed
