his character that makes him vulnerable to any type of external threats to his fragile internal security. There are few protagonists more tragically flawed than Othello, the Moorish military
commander who has only ever felt comfortable leading forces into battle. He is the quintessential outsider, a black man trying to make his way in a white Venetian world.
Then he meets Desdemona, who as Senator Brabantios daughter, is the ultimate social insider. From that moment on, the delicate balance of Othellos life would be shaken to
the point where he would suffer unspeakable anguish because of his loss of equilibrium. His descent would be precipitous and have devastating consequences on himself and everyone close
to him. Othellos downfall would be the result of not one flaw, but of three, the first of which has been described as
the "tragedy of love" (Nostbakken 108). The Moorish general, though middle-aged, had no experience dealing with matters of the heart until meeting the young and beguiling Desdemona. His
military training had conditioned him to cover any vulnerabilities within a veneer of steely austerity. Because his feelings for Desdemona caught him completely off-guard, Othello is completely unprepared for
the "depth and intensity" (Vanita 341) of his love. Just as his pulse has escalated, so do the changes that occur in his life. Knowing that Senator Brabantio
will not approve of his daughters union, the couple elopes, and upon returning from their honeymoon, Othellos love for his bride has reduced him to acting like a bumbling schoolboy,
