It is the story of a group of individuals trying to get across the mountains to a new home in California who were ultimately stuck in the mountains without anything to eat. They resorted to cannibalism for the most part. The following paper examines the individuals who were a part of the Donner part and discusses the dynamics of the group as it involves the journey and the outcome. Members of the Donner Party The Donner party was not a single group of people who started from one place together, moving across the country to the west coast. In the beginning there were approximately 90 people who were going on the same original journey. Only a few would remain to become what is known as the donner party, however. As one author notes, "At the headwaters of the Sweetwater River, most of the last emigrants on the Trail who were headed to California via the Hastings Cut-off formed a company under George Donners leadership. It was not until the emigrant train reached the Wasatch Mountains east of the Great Salt Lake that the final stragglers arrived, completing the Donner Party" (The Members of the Donner Party, 2005). Obviously there were the Donners. The brothers, "George and Jacob, were considered prosperous, elderly farmers who had no reason to go to California" (The Members of the Donner Party, 2005). They were from German immigrants and were born in North Carolina (The Members of the Donner Party, 2005). They were intrigued by the stories of California and decided to move there.
