There are a number of interesting aspects regarding the concept of leadership in Dunworths The Dollar a Year Principal,
many of which contribute to validating the idea that the education system as a whole is pursuing policies which are neither productive nor appropriate for both students and staff. The
school at Munson which Dunworth was able to regenerate was in a similar position to many schools, not only in the USA but in the UK also, in terms of
falling rolls, underachievement and low morale in general.
Because of staffing constraints, the school did not have a principal of its own, but came under the auspices of a neighbouring high school whose principal was only able
to visit the Munson school occasionally and could not set and implement policy successfully. Consequently, there was a lack of direction and an atmosphere of neglect at Munson, since the
staff were neither able to look to genuine leadership or to formulate and enact policies of their own.
Attendance figures were dropping, there was a poor relationship between staff, students and parents, and this
was reflected in the schools level of academic achievement. Parents were beginning to withdraw their children from the school and look elsewhere for educational provision; although it is evident that
