                                                    That said, during the 1700s, there was a fervor that was dubbed the Enlightenment. During the time, the distinction between scientific and unscientific activities were made clear (Jackson, 1995). The  
                                                
                                                    denial of metaphysics did allow the people to let go of explicit presuppositions about reality (1995). This served to expand minds. Letting go of past notions held as beliefs was  
                                                
                                                    vitally important to the expansion of the Enlightenment movement. At the same time, while thinking was broadened, science was held high as opposed to superstition and religious dogma. 	The fever  
                                                
                                                    would quickly spread to America. While many great thinkers lived in Europe, America had people like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. But there was something unique about Americas transformation in  
                                                
                                                    that a new nation was being formed. The American Revolution occurred in the midst of the Enlightenment. In a climate of free floating ideas, the American colonies challenged their master  
                                                
                                                    and gained independence. There were conflicts present between the Catholic church and Protestant sects however (Abrahamson, 1990). The Protestants supported the American Revolution and the Enlightenment as well. Many of  
                                                
                                                    the ideas inherent in the Enlightenment were compatible with their religious beliefs; thus, there was a great deal of support for the war as Protestantism spread through the Middle Atlantic  
                                                
                                                    and Southern states (1990). Since that time, Protestantism has been influential in the United States and almost every president to serve in the White House has been of that faith.
