It may be because the word spirit conjures up images of something that is not tangible or it could be because Scripture refers to the Holy Spirit in various symbolic terms, like wind or fire (Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, 2005). But, the Holy Spirit is God and the Holy Spirit is a person (Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, 2005). Herrick (2005) explained the term pneumatology; it is derived from two Greek words - pneuma means spirit, wind, or breath and logos, which means matter, word or thing. In Christianity, the pneumatology refers to the "study of the biblical doctrine of the Holy Spirit" (Herrick, 2005). Herrick (2005) went on to say that such study usually "includes such topics as the personality of the Spirit, the deity of the Spirit, and the work of the Spirit throughout Scripture." This is a topic of controversy and of confusion because historically, the personhood of the Holy Spirit has been adamantly opposed by different vocal groups (Herrick, 2005). Couch comments "there are different modes of Gods being we call persons (Ray, 2004). The three persons of the Trinity are distinct as personality, yet there is still only one God" (Ray, 2004). Thiessen also commented on this concept: "the term "trinity" means that there are three eternal distinctions in the one divine essence, known respectively as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three distinctions are three persons and one may speak of the tripersonality of God" (Ray, 2004).
